Weekend project: Extended platform

A quick project for the weekend, a shelf on top of the counter that could be slide out creating an extended platform for easy access to kitchen necessities. Had some cutoff from Brazilian cherry and 4/4 walnut slab.  The project was quick and easy, most time spent on dimensioning the slightly twisted walnut slab where it was jointed by hand planes.

Cherry boards are joined with tongue and grooves, these Brazilian stuff are dense and heavy, perfect for the base.

Jointed, planned and sanded slab, ready for first coat

The sides are raised with some rails to create a pocket for the base to slide in and out

Finished product with drawers rails attached

Sliding extended platform in action. Quick and functional!
